A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck south-eastern Turkey, during the early hours of 6th of February whilst people were asleep. Dozens of aftershocks have been felt since. Its epicentre was near the city of Gaziantep yet millions of people across Turkey, Syria, Lebanon & Cyprus felt the quake. On the Syrian side of the border, a huge area already racked with poverty and desperation and crowded with 4 million people displaced by the country’s long civil war, was further destroyed. Many live in dilapidated and ruined conditions with little health care, and the hospitals in the area were quickly filled with the injured. The weather has, and still is hindering progress, with heavy snow and rain leaving the already vulnerable at further risk.
Since the first hours after the tragedy struck, rescue teams have been racing to save people trapped beneath the rubble after hundreds of buildings collapsed in both countries.
Our delivery partners and colleagues are on the ground, on the Turkish/Syrian border against the clock.
